Our History

Founded in 1979, Yarredi Services began operations as safe accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence. Currently the organisation offers service to women and children affected by, or at risk from, domestic and Indigenous family violence.
Moira Shannon AM. was one of the founders of the service, which began following a public meeting at which community support was gained. Ms Shannon was the Manager of the service until mid 1998.

Our Name

The word Yarredi comes from the language of the Traditional Custodians of this Region. It is the name of the Cape Barren Geese which are virtually unique to this area.
We have adopted geese as an emblem for our service as a representation of the concept of caring, support and community found in their natural flock behaviours including encouragement, teamwork, shared leadership, companionship in times of illness and disaster, and an openness to others regardless of the flock from which they came.
